Shadow of Your Life dance music video feat. Geneviève García

This was a fun experiment and, so far, it looks like a successful one, as people seem to be enjoying the video! This is my first music video that doesn’t feature… well… me. I’ve always thought that this song would lend itself perfectly to dance, and luckily I happen to know a few fantastic dancers, particularly Geneviève García, who choreographed and performed this piece.

Leave a comment and let me know what you think! I’m already talking with another dancer about shooting a second video for a different song—I’d love your opinions on what song it should be!

You guys. I’m floored. Absolutely floored. All told, we raised over $2,000 for NEDA and ANAD in one week. Two thousand dollars. In one week. You all are amazing and generous, and so wonderful, and I cannot believe how lucky I am to have such amazingly fantastic human beings in my life.

To give you a breakdown of how things worked:
$567 was raised through CD sales
$567 was matched by me
Two anonymous donors agreed to match up to $500, which raised the total by an extra $1,000, and meant that we were able to donate $1,067 to each charity.

The screenshots from the donations are posted above. Again, thank you so much for your support, for all of your kind words, and for just being awesome in general.

I’m actually at a loss for words right now. You all know how rare that is.

National Eating Disorder Awareness Week

First things first, I’d recommend watching the video above. Everything will make a lot more sense afterward.

Watched it? Good! Yes, I know it’s a bit on the long side. No, the actual song “10,000 Angels” isn’t that long—I definitely looped it a few times.

Anyhoo, here’s the deal. February 26 through March 4 is National Eating Disorder Awareness week. This is a cause that is pretty near and dear to me (as evidenced by the video above). As such, I’m fundraising for two eating disorder-related charities: NEDA and ANAD.

It works like this: every dollar that you spend at http://store.mattryd.com/ (not iTunes, etc., unfortunately, because it’s too difficult to track dates) during E.D. Awareness week (starting today, actually—Friday, February 24) is going to go to NEDA, the organization responsible for creating this week. What’s more, at the end of the week, I’m going to tally up however much money I’ve raised for NEDA, and I’m going to make a matching donation to ANAD.

When I say “every dollar”, I mean every single dollar. If you spend $5 or $10 (or the special “2 for $11”) on a CD, twice that amount will be going to charity. I’m not removing PayPal fees or shipping from the amount being donated.

If you already have all of my CDs and still want to contribute, just shoot me an email letting me know, and I’ll find something special for you, instead. Possibly some top-secret demos of unreleased songs. Or maybe some of the pre-production demos from “Looking For Home”. The point is, I just want to be able to do something to say ‘thank you’.

I’m not gonna lie: posting that video scares the ever-loving crap out of me. But this is something that I feel really, really passionately about, and I hope that I can convince you guys to either A) donate, or B) just take the time to read up on eating disorders. There are a lot of misconceptions out there, and the more people know, the less ashamed people will feel about seeking out help.

And that’s the point of all of this… to get help to the people who need it.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read all of this, and I hope that you’ll consider helping to bankrupt me by donating to this very very worthy cause.

My friend @localcelebrity is doing something remarkably cool—he has a year’s worth of “Impossible Project” Polaroid film, and is taking one Polaroid (or more if the first one doesn’t turn out) per day for an entire year.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed from my website, but I love Polaroid images. I had one of their cameras growing up, and still remember how amazed I was that I was able to watch a picture develop in my hand. In a world of digital photography and digital video (a world which I am very much a part of), it’s really cool to see someone make a step to be thoroughly analog.

Check out his blog and peruse the other pictures. John’s a crazy-talented photographer, so you not only get the novelty of real (not Hipstagrammed, Instagrammed, filtered fakery) faded photography, but you get to see it done by someone with a fantastic eye for composition.
