Anonymous asked: I found your website through StudioPros. Question: How did you get your music to be licensed by the tv show Scrubs? Is there an organization your a member of that helps license music to tv and film? If so, would you mind sharing what that organization is? I've been looking to find an organization to join to license my music. Thanks!
I wish that I had a super-simple answer for you, but honestly, I’m just very lucky, and have some amazing friends. The longstoryshort of how I ended up on Scrubs is that my friend Molly works in TV in L.A.. One of her friends got a job as a staff writer on Scrubs. Molly thought my music would be a good fit, and she played my CD for her friend, who loved ‘Healed’ and brought it in for the rest of the writers to hear. They all liked it enough to put it on a CD for Bill Lawrence (the executive producer/creator) to listen to. Fast-forward about 6/9 months, and I got a call from Disney’s legal department requesting the sync rights.
Honestly, it was a one-in-a-million chance, and I have no clue if I’ll ever be able to duplicate it. But if it’s taught me anything it’s that I achieve my greatest successes with a lot of help from really great friends. That goes for everything I’ve musically accomplished: selling out venues, playing the Metro in Chicago, getting on mainstream radio in Chicago—none of these could have possibly happened without a lot of help from lots of other people who have been willing to support me throughout my musical endeavors.
I’m sure that a semi-cheesy philosophical answer was the opposite of what you wanted as an answer, but it’s the best I can give you with regards to that specific accomplishment.
As for good, specific advice: I joined Taxi A&R this year, and I’m finding decent luck in getting forwarded to a fair number of publishing houses, managers, and music supervisors. Nothing concrete has come of it yet, but I get about 2/3rds of my submissions forwarded, so I’m hopeful that it’ll eventually lead to something.
